Breaking the Performance Punishment Cycle.

Top performers (over achievers) will surely fail with the over load of work, responsibilities and expectations

Unreasonable demands kill the joy and motivation and the smallest lapse is blown out of proportion and deemed a “Performance issue”.

The irrational pressure  ultimately  takes  its toll  both   physically  and mentally with plummeting  productivity  with rising stress  and burn out while  under performing employees sit around  and twiddle their thumbs.

Performance sans the punishment

If you are subjected to performance punishment you should not suffer.  You can bring the situation back to normal.

Sit down and   logically assess your state of affairs. There is  nothing  better than being  the best  but you should  not be punished for the same .

Use your talents more strategically so that you get space to grow with your achievements. Use your exalted position smartly to achieve your goals by negotiating for your perks, bonus, raise and promotion.

Manage the expectation   of the boss by setting clear boundaries from the start.

Learn to say no tactfully and back down on any extra work unreasonably off loaded   on to you.

Step away now and then, to get a breather.

Clearly your position by stating your limits and current commitments in an assertive manner.

Explain how this extra work will affect your present work.

Weigh your options objectively before accepting, demanding projects and lay out realistic plans.

Negotiate for more people   resource and reasonable deadlines.

Discuss possible bottlenecks along with likely solutions.

Request to delegate some work, manage in efficient manner the new commitments.

Having a supportive family helps ease the pressure.

At times the best and the only strategy is to move on and change job.  Know when to walk away.
