Badmouthing,
mudslinging and rumor mongering knows no end. Gossip may seem harmless but at times
it creates tension, stress and turmoil.
1. Think
again
Gossip will kill your creditability and you will be branded
as rumor-monger.
Management will notice this unprofessional behavior in
bad light.
You can be victim of a gossip attack. It can make you feel heart humiliated and resentful.
Gossip at best can make workplace unprofessional and
unproductive. At worst it can ruin your
career and cause depression.
2. Tame
your Tongue
Take the challenge of controlling
your tongue.
Keep your opinions with
yourself. Be very careful of what you
say.
On hearing gossip resists
the urge to repeat it to others.
Before saying anything
negative, stop and think if someone said same thing about me or my work.
Colleagues may try to get
you to gossip, be wary and don’t rise to bait.
3. Change circle
Distance yourself from your regular
gossip group.
If
unavoidable try to change
the topic to more neutral
subjects or ignore it without
responding or contributing.
Be upfront and state that you are not comfortable taking about
others and do not care what others are
doing.
Be polite and firm as you correct your colleagues.
There are much better things to do then putting others
down.
4. Turn the tables
If gossip refuses to die down deflect the same by
praising the targeted person. it will silence the mudslinging and send
the signal that you are not interested
in the gossip.
Do not go to extreme of alienating yourself from
everyone. Turning in to office grapevine
is essential for keeping taps on what is happening around.
Never venture into private matters or personal
relationship about anyone.
