Teaching of Love By Thich Nhat Hanh (Noble Peace Prize Nominee)

As Brahma is the source of love, to dwell with him you must practice “Brahmvicharas” love compassion joy and equanimity”.

Practicing the immeasurable mind of love, extinguishes anger in the heart of living beings. Practicing the immeasurable mind of compassion, extinguishes all sorrows and anxieties in the heart of living beings.  Practicing the immeasurable mind of joy extinguishes sadness and joylessness.  Practicing the immeasurable mind of equanimity extinguishes hatred, aversion and attachment. – “Nagarjuna,Second Century Buddhist Philosopher”.

Who ever practice the four immeasurable minds together with the seven factors of enlightenments, the four noble truths and the Noble enlightenment path will arrive deeply at enlightenment love, compassion and joy.

There are four aspects of true love:-

Maitri- The intention and capacity to offer joy and happiness.

Karuna- Intention and capacity to relieve and transform suffering and lighten sorrows.  Simply said,” compassion”.

Mudita (Joy) -True love always bring joy to yourself and to the one we love.  Happiness relates to both body and mind.  Whereas joy relates primarily to mind.

Upeksha (Equanimity)- Non attachment, nondiscrimination, even mindedness or
lettering go.

Metta Sutta (Discourse on love)-   He or she who wants to attain peace should practice being upright, humble and capable of using loveable speech.  He or she will know how to live simply and happily with senses calmed, without being covetous and carried away by the emotions of majority.

Just as mother loves and protect her only child at the risk of her own life, we should cultivate boundless love for all living beings.

Events that are conspired neither mental nor physical are related to our mind.  They are gain, loss, birth, death, grammar, literature, time, space, union, separations, impermanence and quantity being things as similar or dissimilar etc.

A peaceful person recognizes in himself by following signs:-

Relaxed sleep.
No nightmares.
Waking state is more at ease.
No anxiety /depression.
Will be loved/ protected by everyone around.

Kill anger, killing anger removes suffering and bring peace and happiness.  Angry words and action hurt, first of all to oneself.  Those with no anger means, people who have no seeds of anger in their consciousness.  A person without seeds of anger can smile no matter what is said to him.

Two people might hear the same words and see the same things yet only one becomes angry.  Words and events only stimulate, what is inside us.  We have to master our own anger before we can help others do the same.

When anger arises close your eyes and ears returns to yourself and tend to the source of anger within.

Seven reasons for letting anger go:-

It makes us ugly.
It makes us suffer.
We are unable to develop /flourish.
Fail to prosper materially/spiritually
We become known only for our anger.
We become a hungry ghost.

Five Kinds of anger rousing situations.

First Situation- When someone’s action not words irritates us.  Pay attention to his words only.

Second situation- Someone who speaks venom but his actions are friendly.  Pay attention to his action and ignore his word.

Actions and Word, both unpleasant- Look carefully and try to find out some positive qualities even if they are not immediately apparent.

Actions, Words and Thoughts, all unwholesome.  If you have love in your heart we will be able to accept those whose actions speech and thoughts are all disagreeable.

Actions, Speech and Thoughts, all whole some – Resolve to spend time by his   side.

Look deeply into suffering of others.  Someone whose actions are unkind, whose thoughts are unwholesome, whose speech is unwholesome is certainly suffering a lot.

Samiddhi Sutra-Four important subjects are discussed :-

The idea of happiness.
The existence of real joy.
The practice of reliance.
The trap of complexes.

Chasing after the five worldly pleasures, running after fame, wealth, sex, sleep or food do not bring lasting happiness. Abandon the idea of happiness in future and dwell deeply in the present moment. Take refuge in the island of the self, the island of peace in each of us.  Do not take refuse in anything else. Thinking you are better, worse than or equal to others. All of these complexes arise because we think we are separate self.  Happiness built on the nation of a separate self is weak and unreliable.

Five harmful desires- Money, sex, fame, overeating and oversleeping.

True love contains respect. In Vietnamese tradition husband and wife always respect each other as honored guests.

Deep listening and loving speech.

Never in history we had so many means of communication. Television, radio, telephone, fax, e-mail, the World Wide Web, yet it remain islands with little real communication between family members, individuals in society or Nations.

Right speech means refraining from these following four actions:-

Not telling the truth (say black if white)
Exaggerating (more beautiful/ ugly than it is)
Forked tongue (different thing to different person)
Filthy language (insult/ abuse people)

Five kinds of heart incense: the incense of mindfulness training, concentration, insight, liberation and the flower of liberation.

To be strong a tree sends more than one root deep into the soil.  If a tree had only one root, it may be blown over by the wind. The life of couple also needs to be supported by many elements- families, friends, ideals  practice and sangha.

Blaming and arguing never helps.

Living together is an art.  Even with a lot of good will, you can still make the other person very unhappy. Good will is not enough.  We need to know the art of making the other person happy.  Art is the essence of life.  Be artful in your speech and action. The substance of art is mindfulness.

In life, it often necessary to make difficult choices. We cannot catch two fishes at the same time, one in each hand; it is difficult because if we accept growing up, we must accept suffering.

Five mindfulness training:-

Aware of the suffering caused by the destruction of life.
Aware of the suffering caused by exploitation, social injustice, stealing and oppression.
Aware of the suffering caused by sexual misconduct.
Aware of the suffering caused by unmindful speech and inability to listen to others.
Aware of the suffering caused by unmindful consumption.

There are six Earth touching:-

Look deeply within.
See connection between you and other living beings.
See that you are protected and nourished by the land and all human beings who have been on this land.
Transmit energy to those we love.
Transmit energy (love and composition) who have made you suffer.
Go down to your ancient spiritual roots.

Two prostrations- Vertical line, for spiritual and blood ancestors. Horizontal, for the here and the now.
