Distributed Leadership

Which is better model of leadership, one powerful leader sitting at the top and controlling an organization through a rigid chain of commands or a set of empowered individuals taking various leadership roles with ownership for the organizations success?

A single, all powerful leader running a small company successfully cannot be expected to deliver the same performance when the company grows bigger.  He or his decisions could be delayed and may go wrong because of remoteness from ground reality.

The organization may lose the opportunities to make the best knowledge based decisions if competent leaders in touch with ground realities are not given leadership responsibilities.

The new work force do not mind exercising their options for a better working environment in contrast to old work force who opted for job security due to lack of alternatives.

Top leadership generally is not willing to allow dilution of their hard earned power and position.

Transition to distributed leadership model will require organizations to revisit their values and reward system.
They should start valuing the unique combination of many rather than a few key leaders.

This will make all feel that they have a voice.  Senior leadership must empower others and facilitate capable leaders to emerge.

LEADERSHIP & THE BRAIN DESIGN

No creature can fly with just one wing. Gifted leadership occurs where heart & head, feeling & thought meet. These are two kings that allow a leader to soar.
All leaders need enough intellect to group the specifics of the task & challenges at hand. However intellect alone will not make a leader, leaders execute a vision by persuading and by creating resonance. THE NEW LEADER: TRANSFORMING THE ART OF LEADRESHIP INTO THE SCIENCE OF RESULTS

PRIMAL LEADERSHIP
The fundamental task of a leader is to prime good feelings in those they lead. That occurs when a leader creates resources, a reservoir of positively that frees the best in people. At it roots, the primal job of leadership is emotional.

TOXIC LEADERSHIP
Poisons the emotional climate of a workplace.

MEMORY BOOK

Every organization must compile a memory book to record their thoughts, fears and hopes which could be shared with future generations.
Leadership is distributed. It resides not solely in the individual at the top but in every person at every level who, in one way or the other, acts as a leader to a group of followers.
Leader is not just what he does but how he does it. It calls the open loop nature or system of the human brain’ nature of the limbic system our emotional centers. An open loop system depends largely on external sources to manage itself. A close loop system such as the circulatory system is self regulatory.
Comforting presence of another person not only lowers the patient’s blood pressure but also shows the secretion of fatty acids that block arteries.
Open loop system/design of the limbic system means that other people can change our very physiology and so our emotions. By fifteen minutes conversations the physiological profit changes, that is called the phenomenon of mirroring.
When three strangers sit facing each other in silence for a minute or two, the one who is most emotionally expressive transmits his or her mood to the other too without speaking a single word.
Leaders typically talked more than anyone else and what they said was listened to more carefully. They are first to speak out on a subject, their remarks are most often referred to what the leader had said than to any one else’s comments.
All eyes ultimately turn to the dominant member- the emotional leader.

LAUGHTER THE OPEN LOOP

Emotions may spread like viruses but not all emotions spread with the same ease. Cheerfulness & warmth spreads most easily while irritability is less contagious and depression spreads hardly at all.
Laughter demonstrate the power of the open loop in operation, hearing laughter we automatically smile or laugh creating a spontaneous chain reaction resulting in positive emotional hijack.
Smiles & laughter evolved as a non verbal way to cement alliances, signifying that an individual is relaxed & friendly. Smiles can be feigned but laughter is uniquely trust worthy sign of the friendship.

Emotionally intelligent leaders attract talented people, conversely negative people who are cold, irritate, touchy, domineering repel people.
Optimist enthusiastic leaders more easily retain their people.
A sober mood helps while considering risky situation. Too much optimism can lead to ignoring dangers. Sudden flood of anger can rivet a leader’s attention on an urgent problem. Mild anxiety can focus attention & energy. Prolonged distress can sabotage & leaders relationship. Beyond a moderate level increase in anxiety and worry erode mental abilities.
Have a glass-is-half-full outlook.
A well timed joke or playful laughter can stimulate creativity; open lines of communication enhance a sense of connection & trust and can make work fun, Increases the likely hood of financial concession during a negotiation.
For every 1 percent improvement in the service climate, there is a 2 percent increase in revenue. Superior customer care is the holy grail of any service industry.

RESONANT LEADERSHIP

Resonance amplifies and prolongs the emotional aspect of leadership. Resonance minimizes the noise in the system. “More signal less noise” is the mantra which glues people together in a team.

THE DISCORDANT LEADER

Dissonant leadership produces groups that feel emotionally discordant they will have a sense of being continually off-key.
Discordant leaders can range from abusive leaders who brawls/bawls out and humiliate people to the manipulative socio path. Some more subtle using a surface charm or social polish even charisma to mislead & manipulate.

 THE DEMAGOGUE.

Demagogue & dictators have used their leadership qualities for deplorable ends. Demagogues’ spread negative emotions mix of fear & anger the threat to “us” from “them and the cleared that “they will take what “we” have.
Their message polarizes people rather that utilizing for a common cause. Polities are demagogues most natural ecological niche.
Self absorbed leaders are often  clueless.

COMMUNICATION TIPS FOR WOMEN

Despite being more articulate and better listener’s women are wrongly perceived as being either too pushy, or too soft, two aggressive or overly accommodating in their communication styles. Women also complain of being interrupted in speech and criticized for being emotional in their approach.  Women tend to show greater consideration for the opinion of others mistaken for lack of assertiveness.
Women who talk tough are labeled as bossy and domineering. Striking a fine balance between the two extremes can be a challenge.

Tips to help women to communicate effectively.

TALK STRAIGHT AND BE DIRECT
More hesitant to ask directly what they want when compared to men.
Women generally adopt a round about way of asking but hinting or sarcasm seldom gets the message across. It can result in a lot of frustration on both sides.
Avoid sugar coating and be straight forward & honest in your criticism.
When you enunciate and make your statements emphatic rather than questioning you sound clear, convincing and in control.

USE ASSERTIVE GESTURES
Good eye contact, a confident posture and communication style will help in generating better effect/impact.
Don’t let others rile you with interruptions. Simply say “Could you please let me complete? “Or “I am not finished yet “…. And continue speaking.

SMILING
Women tend to smile a lot while conversing which is perceived as inappropriate.
Avoid giggling or using a smile to avoid sarcasm or when nervous.
A smile is best used to send across a positive message and reinforce what you are saying.

SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNICATIONS WITH FACTS
Women are prone to add disclaimers to their statements by using words such as “ifs” and “buts”.
Avoid using vague language, not completing the sentence, tempering statements with phrases like, “I feel & apologizing for your comments” these can undermine your credibility.
Use goal oriented language and support your opinions with sound data & facts.

WATCH OUT FOR VOLUME
Women speak in much softer tone.
Measured speech & a moderate pitch that is neither shrill nor too soft will help in holding the attention of audience/other person.
Good communication skills not only make you feel good also create the confidence and credibility to succeed in the workplace.
